Mr. Oberhill graduated with a bachelor's in chemistry from Michigan State University, and he achieved a master’s degree in environmental health and safety from the University of Denver. Before coming into the field of cannabis, he worked in environmental testing and research and development for a medical device manufacturer. Dane has been working for Kaycha Labs Colorado for 5 years, where he has progressed from an Analyst up to the leadership of the laboratory.

During the regulatory licensing review process, Kaycha’s Monrovia Lab was staffed with a team of skilled analysts, equipped with all new state-of-the-art equipment, and ISO accredited. The analysts were trained by veteran Quality Assurance, Compliance and Lab Directors from existing sister laboratories. In addition, the company’s proprietary Laboratory Information Management System (Pure LIMS) was installed and updated to ensure compliance with all California mandated detection limit standards.  The lab is now accepting samples from clients to perform the full array of compliant and R&D testing across all matrices.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (October 12, 2021) – Through its wholly owned affiliate, MH Verify, Kaycha Labs, a leader in Cannabis and Hemp testing technologies and methods, has launched a Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) In-Field Testing Kit solution. HLVd tests are performed on-site by cultivators and results are known within an hour of initiating the testing process.

HLVd is a single-stranded, circular infectious RNA strand with no protein coat. Infected flowering plants will have smaller and looser buds resulting in fewer trichomes. Over time, yields by weight can be reduced by up to 70% along with a loss of both potency and terpene concentration of up to 35%. Additionally, one infected mother plant could contaminate hundreds of adjacent plants or clones with the virus.

HLVd symptoms are often subtle, making it difficult to observe with the naked eye. We have found that cultivators are able to convert a subjective judgement into an objective fact, utilizing the highly effective diagnostic kit. The HLVd test kit allows for growers to detect the pathogen and take private, preventative actions to possibly stop the viroid from contaminating their crop further.

Chris Martinez, President of Kaycha Labs, details the potential costs of ignoring HLVd, “If a single uninfected cannabis plant produces 3 pounds of flower and current pricing is $1,500 per pound, the revenue potential for that one plant is $4,500. An infected plant experiencing both a 70% diminished yield and a decrease in potency of 35% would only generate ~$880 in revenue, translating into a revenue loss of ~$3620 (80% overall loss).  And knowing that there are 100’s of neighboring plants, the potential business impact to a cultivator is devastating.”

Chief Science Officer, Stephen Goldman, also notes, “As with most obligate pathogens, prevention is key, which starts with early detection. The most reliable and sensitive means of detection is accomplished by viral RNA testing and our field test kit can help growers identify and mitigate the spread of pathogens like HLVd in their cannabis and hemp plants.”

Working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create Cannabis Lab Competency Standards and improve Analyte Measurement Comparability.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (August 18, 2021) – Kaycha Labs, a leader in Cannabis and Hemp testing technologies and methods, is proud to announce its successful participation in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Cannabis Quality Assurance Program (CannaQAP).

By taking part in CannaQAP’s Exercise 1 (potency with 17 cannabinoids) and CannaQAP’s Exercise 2 (potency, heavy metals, and moisture content) interlaboratory testing programs, Kaycha has collaborated with non-regulatory bodies and other industry entities to address the need for standardization in Cannabis and Hemp testing.

“The NIST mediated interlaboratory study is another Kaycha initiative aimed at addressing the urgent need for standardized testing protocols and reporting consistent and accurate data.  The most common complaint among our clients is inconsistent reporting.  And the most common concern among regulators is “potency lab shopping,” explained Stephen Goldman, Chief Science Officer at Kaycha Labs. “To ensure that the study was comprehensive, five of our lab locations participated in the CannaQAP.  Our results demonstrated that cannabis labs can easily provide consistent data across state geographies and that the standardization of testing protocols will assure all industry participants that labels are accurate and can be relied upon.  In addition, our efforts should assist regulators address those lab companies putting out false potency claims and/or inaccurate data to curry favor with cannabis companies.”

The company’s nine labs are in California, Colorado, Florida (Fort Lauderdale/Davie and Gainesville), Massachusetts, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Tennessee.

In recent weeks, Kaycha has acquired Evio Labs in Medford, Oregon, signed a definitive agreement to acquire DB Labs in anticipation of Clark County and Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board approvals, and received a provisional license to open and operate a lab in Natick, Massachusetts. Both the Oregon and Nevada labs were early entrants to their respective markets; Evio Labs Medford commenced operations in 2014 and DB Labs was organized in 2014 and operates its ~11,000-square-foot lab several blocks away from the Las Vegas Strip. The Massachusetts lab is a new build and is strategically located in Natick near major interstate highways within a couple hours driving time to all major customers.
